Southbank Centre
Rebranded the Southbank Centre in London in a design case study

Overview
Overview
In my Branding Expressions course which I took while studying abroad at London College of Communications, I created a re-imagined brand world using an already existing wordmark and assets for Southbank Centre, a world-renowned complex of art and music venues in Central London. My envisioned brand style for Southbank Centre consists of re-greening the space which consists of brutalist, industrial architecture within a highly urban setting.

Logo Design & Brand World
Logo Design & Brand World
I created this logo and brand world for my envisioned re-brand of Southbank Centre. The original logo consisted of only the logotype, so I created a logo design that includes more organic and round plant elements in order to convey the brand's emphasis on the already existing vegetation and sustainability efforts of Southbank Centre as well as pushing to make these environmental components more of a central part of the center's branding style. I believe that this new logo adds a fresh pop of color and life to the brand world while fitting seamlessly with the brand's angular logotype.

I created this video with photos I took from my site visits at the Southbank Centre(SBC) as well as from personifying my plant characters from my logo. I wanted to blend real imagery of the SBC with visions I have for its more sustainable and vibrant brand world in addition to the harmonious ways that plant characters interact with one another to explore the center.

For one of my touchpoints for the SBC, I created a friendly, energetic mug graphic that food vendors at the SBC are able to distribute purchased drinks within these re-usable mugs. The mug would also be sold at the Southbank Centre's gift shops.

Business Card
Business Card
For reference, seed paper is a kind of paper made from paper waste and contains seeds that can grow if planted in soil and watered correctly. The paper is completely biodegradable, which I found very fitting for my brand world's mission to respect the environment through adding more flora to urban places like London as well as reducing waste. The look and feel of seed paper also instantly gives a more earthy vibe to the business card and shows clients instantly that entertaining while protecting the Earth is SBC's mission.

Southbank Centre Zero Waste Festival Campaign
Southbank Centre Zero Waste Festival Campaign
As part of the "Impact and Innovation" unit of my course, I brainstormed ways I establish my envisioned sustainable branding style as a long-term, prioritized effort by Southbank Centre. I developed ideas for an imagined Southbank Centre Zero Waste Festival, a large-scale festival including its own specific brand identity as well as sustainable touchpoints that are completely zero waste. I wanted the festival components to be educational about environmental issues, emotional, and also aesthetically eye-catching.

I developed a secondary logo for the Zero Waste Festival. The logo I developed combines the semiotics associated with the words "zero" and "waste" while also looking like a microphone. The developed logo borrows the "O" from the original Southbank Centre logotype in the font Noe Display while also resembling the number "zero". The lower half of the logo represents a waste basket's shape.

Garden Guidance Instagram Post
"Garden Guidance" is a hypothetical, educational gardening workshop which I wanted to implement within my envisioned Zero Waste Festival. I created a social media post to be launched on Instagram and Facebook which would promote the workshop to a widespread and diverse audience.

For a second touchpoint, I brainstormed a vertically growing garden wall installation that would serve as a literal "pillar" that solidifies my brand world's mission to re-green Southbank Centre. The installation would be a stunning art piece to inspire visitors to appreciate the beauty and calm of nature. The installation would be introduced during the Zero Waste Festival and be used as a backdrop and staging area for performers at a hypothetical music festival "Eco Luv".
